Legislation sponsored by State Representative Seth Lewis (R-Bartlett) celebrating the voices of the Indian American community in our state’s democracy has been signed into law. The legislation, introduced by Lewis this spring, creates the Illinois American Indian Advisory Council.

“In Illinois, we are blessed with an active and vibrant Indian American community. I am proud to have introduced legislation to create the Indian American Advisory Council and give this community a greater voice in our government,” said Lewis. “This legislation provides a direct line for Indian Americans in Illinois to express their opinions on policies that directly affect their community.”

House Bill 4070 creates the Illinois American Indian Advisory Council, which is tasked with advising the Governor and the General Assembly on policy issues directly impacting the Indian American community in Illinois. The newly created Council provides an opportunity to advance the role and civic participation of Indian Americans in government proceedings. The Council will deliver reports to the General Assembly twice a year

The bill passed both houses unanimously with broad bipartisan support in early April and was signed into law by the Governor on Friday, June 10th.
